Nik Wicks, LPC Staff Therapist

Pronouns: They/Them

Nik is a Queer and Trans provider who works most often with adolescents and adults. Many of their clients identify as LGBTQIA+, Neurodiverse, Polyamorous, and may be part of the Kink community. Nik’s expertise lies in supporting those who may be establishing or exploring their Neurodiverse or Queer identities, navigating life transitions, dealing with feelings of depression or anxiety, or navigating impacts related to acute or complex trauma.

Nik views therapy as a process of guided and assisted change—like a road trip. You’re behind the wheel while they ride along with you: helping to pick a destination,  just talking, or giving directions. Through this approach, they find the therapeutic journey is just as meaningful as the destination. Nik utilizes a blend of talk and art therapy, working from a person-centered and strengths-based perspective. Nik has a strong interest in bespoke holistic and trauma-informed care, often utilizing an eclectic array of techniques borrowed from CBT, TF-CBT, DBT, and beyond. Their goal in the space is to help you develop self compassion and understanding, come up with adaptive solutions to problems, and empower you to make the changes you want in order to live a values-aligned life. This involves looking at how your past and present experiences, your relationships, your thoughts and feelings, and greater systems come together to shape and influence you— and how you can use your strengths and skills to shape them right back.

Before working in the private practice sphere with clinics like Sunflower, Nik worked in community mental health on both the Crisis and Youth & Family teams at The Bridge Youth & Family Services in Palatine. They earned their BA in Fine Arts at Columbia College Chicago, and their MA in Art Therapy at Adler University. Outside of the office they enjoy experimenting with different analog arts and crafts, reading horror novels, or spending time in nature.
